Prologue

Vallescura, 1911 — today

A lookout house from 1911. A roofless ruin full of wild figs. Twenty-four rooms now — and the same light, falling gold across the bay, every evening.

Built as a lookout and farmhouse above Vallescura, the house still keeps the hillside's hours: breakfast among the lemon trees, a swim before lunch, dinner as the lights come on across the bay.

The house — our story

I bought a ruin with a view, and then I could not leave.

My grandmother was born in Vallescura and left for the city at sixteen. When I came back in 2012, the old lookout house above the harbour was for sale — roofless and full of wild fig trees.
We kept the walls, the stone stairs and the lemon terraces, and asked craftspeople from along the coast to make almost everything else. Casa Aurelia opened in 2014 with nine rooms. Today there are twenty-four.
Look after the trees, the walls and the people, and the hotel looks after itself.
Livia Marchetti
We came for four nights and stayed nine. The view from the Terrace Suite still wakes me up at home.
