The monthly rhythm

Order is not a January event.

Invoices, bank feeds, receipts and payroll flow into one set of books. Your named accountant checks them every month. When a return is due, the work has already been done — carefully, in the open, and in your own software.
Fixed fees
Agreed in writing before we start.
A name, not a queue
One accountant who knows the file.
Questions included
Phone or email, without a separate charge.
Your books stay yours
Kept in your own cloud software, so you can always take them with you.

Self AssessmentYour personal tax return prepared from the books, explained in plain English, and filed once you approve it.
Payroll & pensionsPayslips, real-time submissions to HMRC and workplace pension contributions, run on the same day every month.
VAT returnsRegistration, the right scheme for your trade, and quarterly returns filed under Making Tax Digital.
Year-end accountsLimited company accounts and corporation tax, gone through with you before anything is filed.
AdviceA straight answer when you are deciding whether to register for VAT, take someone on or become a limited company.
The year · then round again

No January ambush.

The first year starts with onboarding. After that the rhythm stays the same: books every month, accounts after your year end and the tax return long before the rush.

All year round: we deal with HMRC letters as your agent, and questions by phone or email are part of the monthly fee.

  1. 01OnboardingWe take over the records, set up the software and agree what you will send us.
  2. 02Monthly booksBank, sales, costs and payroll kept current, with a short check-in each month.
  3. 03Year-endAccounts drawn up after the year closes and gone through line by line, then an hour to plan drawings, dividends and what to put aside.
  4. 04Tax returnPrepared from the year's books, explained and filed once you approve it. We show what falls due in January and July, and what to put aside.

A quiet view of the month

Current. Reconciled. Ready to explain.

Each month the bank is reconciled, the receipts matched and anything unclear sent to you as one short list of questions. What you see is what we see.

The six people reading the numbers

A name to call. A file already read.

Every client has one of us as their named accountant. If they are away, a colleague who has already read your file covers for them.

Client voices

Four businesses, four kinds of books.

“I used to lose most of January to my tax return. Now Samir sends me three questions in the autumn, I answer them over a coffee, and it is filed before Christmas.”
Lucy FairburnFreelance illustrator, Headingley
“Two cafés means a lot of receipts. Yuna connected the tills, the card reader and the bank in our first month, and the figures finally match what is in the drawer.”
Tom and Adaeze ClarkeOwners, Corner Pantry cafés
“Switching felt like a big job. In the end it was one letter to sign and one online approval. They wrote to our old accountant and collected everything themselves.”
Rachel BoothDirector, Booth & Ward Joinery
“Payroll for six people used to be my Sunday night. Grace runs it now, the pension contributions go across with it, and I just approve the summary.”

Straight answers

Before you ask.

No. We work in most of the common cloud bookkeeping apps. If you are on spreadsheets or paper, we suggest one that suits your trade and set it up as part of onboarding.

Stainbeck Lane · since 2014

Counting began with a tally. We began here.

Megan Lane founded the practice above a bakery on Stainbeck Lane after ten years at a large firm, where the smallest clients always waited longest. Tally & Lane is now six people, two doors further down the same lane.

The mark is four strokes with a fifth drawn through them — the oldest way of counting, and the place we still work.
